Leading the

WAY

Navigating the Path to Excellence

The Greenfield Board of Trustees and faculty are an extraordinary group of people, committed to ensuring that our facilities meet the needs of our student body and that the school remains on solid financial footing. With careful fiscal planning, the board has crafted a long-range financial strategy to support the campus expansion and revitalization through a combination of reserve funds, financing, and a capital campaign.

The campaign will be led by a strong committee of Stewart Arens, Chuck Finklea, Vance Forbes, Suzette Gibson, Jeff Ross, and Dan Whaley, along with Head of School Deb Rogers, Assistant Head of School Steve Manna, and Director of Advancement Melodie Powell.

The school is embarking on the Expansion of Excellence Campaign for two key purposes:

+

The campaign will help to offset the costs of  constructing and furnishing of the new Upper  School building.

+

The campaign will fund critical renovations of the existing campus.

Building Towards

BRILLIANCE

Upper School Classroom Construction

The school has not constructed any new classroom facilities since 1996, when the Skinner Technology Center was built. Since that time, enrollment has climbed by more than 150 students. Mobile units have provided four temporary classrooms at a total cost of $60,000 per year but not a permanent solution to the problem of campus crowding.

Construction of the Upper School classroom building is projected to cost $3.79 million. This has been established through a competitive bidding process. We anticipate this facility will be completed and ready for occupancy in time for the 2024–25 school year.

The school is embarking on the Expansion of Excellence Campaign for two key purposes:

Ten new classrooms, accommodating 222 students, equipped with instructional technology on each primary teaching wall

Administrative office

Common spaces for collaborative activities such as clubs and group meetings

STEM lab and biology lab

Teacher workspace

 Restrooms

The Journey to

PROGRESS

The Future of Excellence

In recent years, the school has had to decline admission to students in some grade levels because the classrooms are completely at capacity. Moving the Upper School to the new building will allow for expansion of the Lower and Middle Schools. At present, there is no space in which the school can add additional classes. This campus expansion will include renovations to the current campus, which will support the school’s learning objectives.

The Language Center

The Language Center provides life-changing learning support and instruction for students with diagnosed learning differences and/or attention deficit disorder. These students have often struggled to find success in the classroom due to challengesin reading fluency and comprehension, written expression, processing speed, and ability to focus. With the support of the Orton-Gillingham trained Language Center staff, however, students in this program are able to succeed at the level of their true ability and often become highly successful professionals as adults. The current Language Center facility is inadequate for several reasons. The age and condition of the building makes it difficult to maintain adequate climate control, and the size of the building does not allow for expansion of the program or addition of other student support services. Through the Expansion of Excellence Campaign, a different building on campus, currently used for 4-year-olds classrooms, will be renovated to create an expanded and improved Language and Student Support Center.

PLAYGROUND RENOVATION

Greenfield’s preschool program nurtures and educates 3 and 4 year olds throughout the day and year. An essential part of their daily life is outside play. The existing playground equipment has cracked, rusted, and worn down from years of heavy use. It is essential that our youngest students have a safe and enjoyable outside play environment. The playground will be completely replaced with new equipment that will be enjoyed by our students for many years to come. The quotes received for this project include teardown and take-away of existing worn equipment as well and purchase an installation of all new equipment.

Air Conditioning the Gym

The gym is the only indoor space on campus that can accommodate Greenfield’s entire school community for athletics, assemblies, ceremonies, performances, and pep rallies. Our gym is the center of many campus activities, often hosting parents, grandparents, and community members. We are the only school in our division that does not have air conditioning in its gymnasium! Additionally, with no air conditioning, these events can be uncomfortable and even hazardous. Air conditioning the gym is an essential upgrade to support the well-being of the Greenfield community and those who visit!

Paving Gravel parking Lot

As the school’s staff and student population have grown, parking has become tighter. The two main staff lots are gravel parking areas that present maintenance challenges, look unsightly, and invite additional safety issues. The campaign allots for Greenfield to pave all existing gravel areas and resurface current paved areas, promoting a uniform road surface across campus.

New Restrooms with Breezeway

Availability and adequacy of bathrooms has been identified as a serious and common concern. Students and faculty in the Middle and Upper School buildings, as well as the mobile units, must walk outside to access a bathroom. This walk is particularly problematic in times of inclement weather. Greenfield will construct a new bathroom building with both student and faculty bathrooms at the far end of the Upper School building. A breezeway connecting the bathrooms to the Middle School building will be included to mitigate the accessibility issues.

Landscaping Central Campus

An important part of the Greenfield experience is the time students spend outdoors enjoying the campus’s beautiful green spaces. The central campus features a courtyard passed by and played in every day; the imagination of younger students shines while playing make-believe games under the shade of the magnolia tree while older children grab a quick game of touch football during break time. The decades of children at play in this area have taken their toll, and the area is very much in need of refurbishment and revitalization.

New Art Gallery

The AV room is a generic room on campus utilized for smaller events and meetings with parents, clubs, classes, and the board. The re-creation of this space into the Green Room Gallery, will enable the school to promote its studio arts program and highlight student work to school stakeholders and the wider community, while continuing to serve its current function.

Fence and gate on highway 42

As incidents of school violence have increased drastically in number and severity across the country, campus security has become exponentially important. Our open campus was an intentional decision to create opportunities for outside play and socialization. To maintain this freedom that our students are accustomed to, we will better secure the perimeter of the grounds. Fencing will be placed alongside Highway 42, the entrance and exit will be gated, and cameras will be placed at the entrance to monitor individuals entering campus.
